A spike in inflation to 3.3% has triggered the sharpest fall in consumer confidence for four years, as heightened job security concerns leave households increasingly protective of their disposable income. This caution has seeped into the trading environment, where travel spend recorded its first year-on-year decline since 2021, and three-quarters of businesses reported a slowdown in April bookings. Despite these headwinds, shoulder season continues to grow, and some recent reports show signs of a rebound.

Recent travel sector updates reveal robust demand increasingly tempered by Middle East instability. While easyJet and Jet2 report early growth, the continued conflict has shortened booking curves and obscured forward visibility. Performance remains mixed – while Club Med maintains a positive trajectory, and Royal Caribbean sees record cruise demand, TUI’s 7% revenue dip underscores growing consumer caution. As 2026 continues, the sector’s resilience will rely on navigating these turbulent global conditions.
